White has long been accepted as the traditional color of the wedding dress, but wedding gowns were not always white. The marriage of Queen Victoria to her cousin Albert of Saxe- Coburg in 1840 has had more influence on weddings than any other. Queen Victoria put the wheels in motion by marrying in white. Though brides continued to wed in gowns of different colors, white was now set as the color of choice for weddings and has continued ever since. In Godey’s Lady’s Book, 1849, this statement was printed: “ Custom has decided, from the earliest ages, that white is the most fitting hue, whatever may be the material. It is an emblem of the purity and innocence of girlhood, and the unsullied heart she now yields to the chosen one.”

There is an old poem about how the color of your wedding dress will influence your future: “Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in grey , you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead. Married in blue, you will always be true. Married in pearl, you’ll live in a whirl. Married in green, ashamed to be seen, Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow. Married in brown, you’ll live out of town. Married in pink, your spirits will sink.”

The Industrial Revolution also brought about change. By the 1880’s and the arrival of the department store, almost every woman could realize her dream of being married in a “new” wedding dress. The white dress was gaining popularity and in 1890, Ladies Home Journal wrote: “That from times immemorial the bride’s gown has been white”. Although this statement was not true, it shows how deeply accepted it was that a wedding gown be white. Although white was popular, some brides, especially the frontier brides, wore dresses that were more practical and could be worn after the wedding. As wedding dresses closely resembled the fashions of the time, only a little alteration was needed for the dress to be perfect to wear again.

Edwardian brides took the traditions of their Victorian ancestors to new extremes. Fashions became more extravagant as the decade progressed, but came to a screeching halt with the outbreak of WWI. Styles became simpler, and also reflected the changing role of women in society with hems getting shorter and the disposing of tightly laced corsets. Coco Chanel was a powerful force behind the change in women's’ fashions, and was the one who officially introduced the short wedding dress in the 1930’s. It was a white knee length dress worn with a long train. This cemented white as the universal color of the wedding dress.

When the Depression hit, brides made do with their “best” dress for the wedding. My great grandmother, who was married in 1928 had a new white wedding dress, but after the wedding she dyed it navy, keeping only the collar and cuffs white—a common practice at that time. During world war 2 , women considered it their duty to give up the traditional wedding , although most brides might be engaged only for a few weeks or even days before the wedding took place. This did not leave enough time to find a wedding dress so the best suit had to do. If the bride was set on having a white dress, one could be borrowed or rented for the ceremony. If both the bride and groom were in the military they were married in their respective uniforms.

After the war, prosperity made it possible for the large dream weddings inspired by the Victorian era to become a reality. Grace Kelly’s marriage to Prince Monaco garnered much publicity because of its grand fairy tale wedding. She wore a white silk and lace gown. The focus of wedding dresses has shifted since the 1950”s. The emphasis now is on the individuality of the bride. So whatever color you choose to be married in, you now know a bit more behind the tradition of the white wedding dress.

In biblical days, blue (not white) represented purity, and the bride and groom would wear a blue band around the bottom of their wedding attire (hence “something blue”). The Greeks are often associated with white for the wedding dress. They used white robes to symbolize youth, joy and purity. Despite this, white wedding dresses have not always been the fashion. In the Middle Ages the white wedding dress was once again made popular by Anne of Brittany, in 1499 — they were again supposed to symbolize virginity. Today, white is an ever-popular color but pastel shades, and stronger bolder colors are also worn but white will always be the primary wedding dress color.

We hope you found this interesting, let us know

Peter Bruce Photo & Video just having fun.Marriage and Wedding Jokes

1) Mathematics of Marriage...

  1. Smart man + smart woman = romance
  2. Smart man + dumb woman = pregnancy
  3. Dumb man + smart woman = affair
  4. Dumb man + dumb woman = marriage
  5. Smart boss + smart employee = profit
  6. Smart boss + dumb employee = production
  7. Dumb boss + smart employee = promotion
  8. Dumb boss + dumb employee = overtime

2) More Mathematics of Marriage...

Chances of a man winning an argument

3) Who is there...

Three older ladies were discussing the problems of getting older. One said, 'Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand, in front of the refrigerator, and can't remember whether I need to put it away, or start making a sandwich' .

The second lady chimed in, 'Yes, sometimes I find myself standing on the stairs and can't remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down.'

The third one responded, 'Well, I am glad I don't have that problem; knock on wood, 'as she rapped her knuckles on the table. She looked up and said, 'That must be the door, I'll get it!'

4) Some Psychology...

A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs.

A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need.

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.

A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.

5) Classic Wedding Jokes from best man speeches...

  1. A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.
  2. A successful woman is one who can find such a man.
  3. To be happy with a man, you must understand him a lot and love him a little.
  4. To be happy with a woman, you must love her a lot & not try to understand her at all.
  5. Married men live longer than single men, but married men are a lot more willing to die.
  6. Any married man should forget his mistakes, there's no use in two people remembering the same thing.
  7. Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed.
  8. Women somehow deteriorate during the night.
  9. A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't .
  10. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, and she does.
  11. A woman has the last word in any argument.
  12. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.
  13. There are 2 times when a man doesn't understand a woman - before marriage and after marriage.

6) True Marriage Story...

Man forced to marry four wives in six months

A Saudi man is in hospital after his divorced parents forced him to marry four times within six months. The battle began when the father insisted the boy should marry a girl from his side of the family.  The mother retaliated by ordering him to wed a girl from her side, reports Arab News quoting Al-Watan daily. But the father wasn't happy with the balance of power and insisted on a third wife from his side, to show who was boss.

The mother, not to be outdone, then demanded that her son include another wife from her side of the family. The son has now been admitted to a hospital for psychological treatment. He is refusing to see his parents or his wives.

7) Advanced Marriage Maths...

Facts about marriage proposals

When asked if there was anything they would have changed about one of the most romantic moments of their lives, several women said a 'bigger diamond!'

  • 54% of men still get down on one knee
  • 44% of men ask their partner's father for permission to marry
  • 57% of men cry when she said yes
  • 65% of women say he could have put more effort and preparation into the proposal
  • 25% of couples wait longer than five years before taking their relationship that step further
  • 23% of women have been proposed to more than once

Hopr you enjoyed this, I meant it all in fun

WEDDING GARTERS

History & Traditions

Throwing garters is considered to be the oldest surviving wedding tradition. Back in Dark Ages it was customary for friends, relatives and guests to accompany the bridal couple to the marriage bed. At first this was to safely see the married couple ensconced in their wedding bed and once established the crowd respectfully left the newly weds to their own company.

The wedding garter toss became a game of sorts. The bridal party would toss the garter at the grooms nose and the person who successfully landed the garter on his nose would be the next to marry.

The custom became rowdier and bawdier until the guests were eager to help the bride out of her wedding clothes. The wedding guests would try to grab the bride's garter for good luck. It is thought to forestall such impropriety, the bride's garter was given to the mob as a distraction. Soon this became an established custom.

Throwing the garter to the groom's men is what remains of the custom. In Northern England the old custom was for male guests to rush the bride at the altar when the ceremony was finished and remove her garter from her leg. In the panic this usually meant the bride was knocked over and trampled on.

Gradually brides made garters easier to detach and finally to avoid threat of injury they tossed their garters away at the end of the ceremony. Garters were imbued with fertility and the bride's garter signified consummation, fulfillment, and progeny and was always fiercely sought after. Untying the bride's garter had a deeply symbolic act. In the past the lucky guest to receive the bride's garter would wear it proudly on his hat, before giving it to the girl of his choice for luck.

Another variation on this custom in the 19th century was for the local youths to race from the church to the bride's house. The first was given the honor of removing the bride's left garter. He would then tie this around his own true love's knee as a guard against unfaithfulness. In the North of England , the custom was for the man to wear the bride's garter in his hat.

Tossing the garter was reintroduced in the early part of the twentieth century. These days, the groom is responsible for removing the garter and tossing it at the eagerly waiting groomsmen at the reception. Much tamer that the early days. Bride would also have a second keepsake garter that they would keep with their wedding dress.

Peter Bruce Photo was lucky to shoot Sara & Keiths wedding at the beautiful Palace Hotel. Which is one of San Francisco’s premier historic hotel, was originally inspired by the most luxurious European hotels of the Gilded Age. It first opened its doors in 1875, and its opulence has since been enjoyed by many generations of society’s elite, including President Woodrow Wilson. Today, this beautiful grand dame continues to enchant its visitors, particularly those who envision an elegant wedding in a royal setting.

What a fun couple, after spending a hour in crazy SF traffic to get to the Palace we got some fun getting ready shots. Then a nice ceremony in the Sunset Court. After doing some family photos, it was off to the cock tail hour and a fun party with some great toasts and lot of dancing.

Thanks for making me part of your day

10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer and 2 More to Ask Yourself

What Your Wedding Photographer Should Tell You Before You Sign a Contract

Peter Bruce Photo & Video and team bELLE have some advise before you hire a wedding photographer, you need to know if their style of taking pictures works with what you envision for your wedding. Here are some important questions to ask any wedding photographer...

  1. What’s your primary style? Posed and formal, relaxed, photojournalistic, creative, artistic, candid, traditional? ( what ever you like the best)
  2. Do you shoot in color or black and white? Or both? Do you shoot in a digital format that can create both color and b/w versions of the same picture?(Both B&W and no extra charge for either)
  3. What kind of input can we have on the direction of the shots? Can we give you a shot list to work from? ( A team effort and a list is great)
  4. Are you the wedding photographer who will actually take our pictures? If not, can we meet the person who will be?(yes and you meet me)
  5. Can we meet any assistants who will also be our taking pictures? (Of course)

  6. How many times have you worked specifically as a wedding photographer? How many were similar to the size and formality of our wedding? (years)

  7. How many other events will you also photograph that weekend? (We do one per day,Yours)
  8. What kind of equipment will you bring with you? How intrusive will lighting, tripods, other equipment or assistants be?(we use the best and have back ups)

  9. Do you develop your own film? (we do at Peter Bruce Photo)
  10. Can we buy the negatives from you? ( we give you all the prints, negs & DVDs which are not watermark or encoded)

After you’ve asked these questions of your potential wedding photographer, there are several questions you’ll want to ask yourself...

  1. Do I like this person? Do I get along with them or get a good feeling from them what Peter Bruce calls "bed side manner"?

  2. Do I like their work as a wedding photographer? Is it well lit, focused, well framed? Looking at their books, do I feel like I have a good feeling for the wedding?

Don’t forget to call their references. While it may feel a bit awkward to call a stranger, it can be invaluable to have an outside opinion on a potential wedding photographer. Remember, your photographs will be one of the most lasting aspects of your wedding – you’ll want to make sure you find the right wedding photographer for you.

We hope this helps you with your wedding and picking a photographer, please let us know.

PLEASE NOTE WE SHOOT ON FILM AND GIVE YOU PRINTS,NEGS AND DIGITAL FILES.This is the best way to go

Best Wishes Peter Bruce Photo & team bELLE

Peter Bruce Photo was lucky enough to shoot Stephanie & Matthew city hall wedding. The City Hall of San Francisco, California, opened in 1915 and is a great place for a wedding its open space area in the city's Civic center is a Beaux Artsmonument to the brief City Beautiful movement that epitomized the high-minded American Renaissance of the period 1880–1917. The structure's dome is the fifth largest in the world. The present building is actually a replacement for an earlier City Hall that was completely destroyed during the1906 Quake.

The architect was A Brown Jr whose attention to the finishing details extended to the doorknobs and the typeface to be used in sinage Brown also designed San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House, Veterans Building, Temple Emanuel,Coit tower and the Federal office building at 50 United Nations Plaza.

The building is vast, totalling over 500,000 square feet (46,000 m²) and occupying two full blocks of San Francisco. It is 390 feet (119 m) long on Van ness ave and Polk Street, by 273 feet, 3 inches (83.25 m) on Grove and McAllister Streets. Its Dome which owes much to Mansats Baroque dome of Les Invalides Paris, is the fifth largest dome in the world, rising 307.5 feet (94 m) above the Civic center area. It is fourteen inches (35 cm) higher than the United States Capital and has a diameter of 66 feet (20 m), resting upon 4 x 50 ton (3.5 x 44.5 metric ton) and 4 x 20 ton girders (3.5 x 17.8 ton), each 9 feet (2.7 m) deep and 60 feet (18 m) long.

The building as a whole contains  7,900 tons (7,035 metric tons) of structural steel from the American Bridge Company near Pittsburgh,PA. It is faced with Madera County granite on the exterior, and Indiana sandstone within, together with finish marbles from Alabama, Colorado, Vermont, and Italy. Much of the statuary is by Henri Crenier.

The beauiful Rotunda is a spectacular space for Peter Bruce to shoot. Opposite the grand staircase, on the second floor, is the office of the Mayor. Bronze busts of former Mayor Goerge Mascone and his successor,Dianne Feinstien, stand nearby as tacit reminders of the Moscone assasstion which took place just a few yards from that spot in the smaller rotunda of the mayor's office entrance. A bust of former county supervisor Harvey Milk who was assassinated in the building was unveiled on May 22, 2008.  While hard to discern these days, the inscription that dominates the grand Rotunda and the entrance to the mayor's small rotunda, right below Father Time.

We hope you enjoyed this and the photos, please let us know.
